How did you get into developing apps?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

I have always been interested in computers and software, I can still remember waking up my Dad to help me load Dig Dug on an old 8086. During my time here at WeatherBug, I’ve worked on J2ME, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, BREW, iPhone and Android. Transitioning from developing desktop to mobile software was pretty natural, especially on the Android platform. I’m a fan of Eclipse so I was excited that they chose Java and Eclipse for their developer tooling.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

We wanted to create a very rich yet accessible application, something that had some depth to it but was approachable for everyone. Here at WeatherBug Mobile we like to push the limits of what a device can do, so we added the ability to show the current temperature on the status bar, which has been a big hit. We also deliver weather alerts so you are never disconnected from bad weather with WeatherBug on your Android device.

How long did it take to develop the app?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

We started this effort before the first release of Android 1.0 and we are continually improving it.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

If you’re asking about Easter eggs, no. We don’t have the time but it might be fun! One feature that may not be obvious is that you can long press on the map to view the weather or add a saved location at that point.

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

We are constantly working to improve our Android app and keep up with the fast pace of change in Android.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Alex Nicol Mobile Team Lead for WeatherBug:

We have already added the WeatherBug Elite product as a paid option to the free WeatherBug. It adds tons of new map layers that can be animated, stuff like Temperature, Wind, Humidity, etc.
