What was your inspiration for developing this app?

KittehFace Software:

Looking through the market, there seemed to be a bit of a gap for this style of game. I was a huge fan of Columns back in the day, and while there’s a couple clones up there, I wanted to make something a little different and ended up with gameplay that’s something of a mix between Columns and a japanese series called Puyo Puyo. I also wanted to build up my internal toolset for future projects, and this seemed like a simple and visually pleasing use of 3D models.

Visually I wanted something clean and good looking, and ended up using cartoonish molecules as the game pieces with interstellar art for the backgrounds, which shift whenever you move up a level. The background aesthetic is similar to Meteos in some ways, which is another puzzle game I was a big fan of.

What’s your personal favorite Android App that you did not develop?

KittehFace Software:

Recently, I really dug the UrbanSpoon select-a-random-restaurant app. Those guys made that thing much cooler than I would’ve expected.

Android App Review Source:

What is your personal favorite feature of this app?

KittehFace Software:

I actually really like Time Attack mode. Those are short, timed games that challenge you to get the highest score in 1 minute, or 2 minutes. It’s nice because you know it won’t take long, and there’s a fair amount of thinking involved to really do well — you need to set up a situation where you can clear a bunch of atoms at once, just clearing a few at a time quickly won’t cut it. That combined with the high scores tracking is probably my personal favorite.

Can we expect any updates to your app in the near future?

KittehFace Software:

I’ve got several features on deck that I’m planning on rolling out over the next few weeks, so there’s lots to come. I want to get some additional game modes in place, online scoreboards to go along with the local ones, and am planning on adding an Achievements-style feature that tracks your accomplishments. My plan is to make the achievements library portable so I can support that concept across future games as well.

Android App Review Source:

Do you have any new apps that will be on the Android Market soon that we should look out for?

KittehFace Software:

I’ve got a few plans, but want to make sure there’s nothing doing the same thing on the marketplace first. I did recently upload Generala Free, which is a Yahtzee-style dice game with a full-featured paid version.

Android App Review Source:

Do you have any future development plans for Android Tablets?

KittehFace Software:

I actually kept tablet play in mind all through Synergy’s development. I want to support a same-screen multiplayer mode with the two players facing each other, like in those old tabletop arcade machines. It should be a lot of fun, and with multitouch working it shouldn’t be bad isolating the controls based on which half of the screen is being manipulated.

The plan would be for that to be a new game mode, but it probably won’t work well on a phone-sized screen so we’ll see… it might make more sense as a separate app. I wouldn’t want to offer a feature that’s basically unplayable to most of the players. Either way, I see the exciting thing about tablet games as being the interaction of more than one player on the same screen. It’ll be fun to find out!
