How did you get into developing apps?

Robot Comics:

While mobile apps may seem simple to an end-user, they are in fact very complex architecturally. Most combine many of the disciplines of software development: memory management, threading, MVC patterns, client-server architecture, databases, web development and GUI design to name a few. For a programmer this is a very interesting challenge. And thanks to distribution channels like the Android Market, most apps get significant exposure, which makes the experience even more rewarding.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

Robot Comics:

There wasn’t anything like Droid Comic Viewer in the market at the time. Android is a great platform, and we love comics, so it was a no-brainer.

Additionally, we use Droid Comic Viewer to test the submissions that we receive, and also to read the comics that we release. We needed it as much as our users.

How long did it take to develop the app?

Robot Comics:

Our free viewers are our way to give something back to the community. We work on them each time we get a break from the pressures of the day to day. Or when we find a nasty bug. Droid Comic Viewer is a live app,
constantly evolving with the support of the community, and thus it would be hard to measure the effort that went into it.

That said, the very first version of Droid Comic Viewer, developed in Android 1.0, took 3 hours to code, which speaks very well of the Android framework and its Eclipse plugin.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Robot Comics:

Not yet. We do plan to include unlockables in the near future to make the experience more fun for power users. Silly things like unlocking a Super-reader badge if you read 100+ comics.

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Robot Comics:

Most definitely. Our roadmap for Droid Comic Viewer goes as far as mid-2010 and includes features such as (in no particular order): the aforementioned unlockables, collection management, RSS comics, comics news, widgets, comments & community, more integration with social networks, desktop syncing, background music and tons of minor UI and Settings improvements. It will be a fun ride.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Robot Comics:

We regularly uploads new comics to the Market, usually on Wednesdays. Currently we do not have plans to develop another app of the magnitude of Droid Comic Viewer, although we do not discard creating apps for specific comic events.
