How did you get into developing apps?
FXware:
At Creatonic, we provide our clients with interactive design and application development solutions on a wide range of platforms. We also develop and operate our own web properties; our collective network of sites and apps are actively used by over a million people worldwide, a number that keeps growing rapidly.
We started to go mobile in 2008. After Apple figured out how to address many of the industry’s problems with the introduction of iPhone, we saw a great opportunity to make our content and services available on the go. The industry has come a long way over the last 18 months in making progress on dealing with mobile distribution, monetization, and user experience issues and we feel that focusing our energy predominantly on mobile development is the right thing to do for us, our clients and advertisers at this moment.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?
FXware:
FXware (www.fxware.com) is one of our properties where we strive to provide our users with accurate and timely currency exchange information wherever they are and whenever they need. For example, our users can use FXware’s currency tools on their iGoogle pages (as a Google gadget), personal sites or blogs (as widgets), browsers (as add-ons or toolbar buttons), etc. Extending this service to the mobile platform was the logical next step for us.

How long did it take to develop the app?
FXware:
From concept to launch, it took about two months. We spent quite a bit of time designing the user interface and functionality on paper, before getting to coding. There are many currency related mobile apps in the market today so we wanted to develop something that stands out and proves to be value-added with its ease of use and content. We believe that was time well spent; our app has enjoyed a steady rate of growth since its launch in the market and we have been receiving positive feedback from our users.

Are there any hidden features to the app?
FXware:
There are a couple of hidden gems. For example, most users are not aware that if one long taps on the currency input box, a custom numeric-only keypad appears specifically designed for this app to allow easy data entry. Other less known features are an integrated tip calculator and a multiple-choice quiz game designed to test users’ global currency IQ. Other most used features include a quick conversion cheat-sheet, streaming forex charts, and real-time list of the most converted currencies, etc. Most users expect only accurate currency conversion functionality and they are pleasantly surprised when they find out the additional features available in the app.
We believe; however, the most important hidden feature of the app is the fact that it comes in 12 languages including Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, and Turkish. Android market or event the phones are not even available in some of these locales yet.
Many application developers downplay the importance of localization or simply don’t have the time to worry about it. Most think it is OK to develop just in English and expect that users would be fine with that. Most users are, but certainly not all. Google understands this well; localization has been among one of their core strategies. Today, Google generates more than half of its revenue outside of the United States, and that percentage increases each quarter. About 80% of world’s cell phones are being used in countries where English is not the native language and smart-phone penetration in those counties still has lots of room to grow. We try to pay attention to these trends in everything we do. To us, localization is not just a task of translating content into different languages but delivering custom solutions with an understanding of different environments, cultures and needs.

Do you have any future plans for this app?
FXware:
User feedback is among our best sources of innovation, so we continuously monitor how users interact with our app and listen to what they have to say. Our number one priority is to make sure that they have a good experience with our app and their expectations are met. We’re also working on couple of new features and looking to partner with a number of online currency trading platforms to mobilize their services and offer it to our user base.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?
FXware:
We try to focus on applications that users will seek to use everyday, as opposed to novelty items or ones that would gain a lot of users quickly but then get forgotten. Although I can’t provide more details at this stage, we are working on a number of applications that provide everyday utility value, leverage location information (i.e. GPS), and utilize social aspects (e.g., connecting with friends, sharing, etc.)
