How did you get into developing apps?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
Been doing it since 8th grade, using BASIC on time-sharing TTY terminals. I have a BSCS, most of which is obsolete knowledge by today’s standards. The ability to re-tool on a regular basis to keep up with technology is the challenge. It’s not just a career, it’s a hobby as well.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
Build a map-based GPS-enabled personal assistant that includes a platform for creating arbitrary modules of functionality called “activities”. I also wanted to see how much existing content (e.g. Contacts, Media, etc.) could be integrated on the map, for example the GPS where you took a picture would place it on the map for you. I also wanted to integrate many location-based features into one map, e.g. Local Search, Weather Forecast, and use lots of transparent overlays. The Android platform came up big for Roundabout.

How long did it take to develop the app?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
This is actually the second implementation; the first one was in JavaME (rest its soul) but as soon as Android SDK was available, the reconstruction began. It took about 4 months of after-hours effort to get to the initial release. The Map UI evolved quickly, and new platform features were integrated along the way (e.g. Voice Recognition).

Are there any hidden features to the app?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
Getting the Contacts integration going is like a “hidden” feature, because it requires some setup, in the form of supplying Street Addresses in your Contacts, so Roundabout can reverse-geocode it onto the map for you. Lots of other features cascade off unlocking that secret. The location-based content integration is probably a “hidden” feature, because it actively searches the other content providers on your device. You can see the same information outside the map in the Content Gallery. It searches your Call Log, Calendar, and Gallery, and gives you a Launcher to reach your content.

Do you have any future plans for this app?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
There are still plans for more features. The execution engine is already built, so its just a matter of configuring interesting activities. There are widgets in-the-works, and a development toolkit for activity construction.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?
“G$” from eScape Technology LLC:
We already have 7 listings on Android Market, and there are always ideas kicking around to keep them updating and deliver more to the users. We are trying paid, free/adless and free/adware models. There are still a couple undeveloped ideas in-the-pipe; we hope to increase the catalog to 10 listings, and list in other venues as well.
