How did you get into developing apps?
Michael Angel:
Well, I’ve been developing apps for TI graphing calculators, the PC in various languages (C++, DarkBasic Pro, and others), and finally found an easily accessible market with Android this previous Spring.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?
Michael Angel:
In the Spring of 2007 I had worked on an alpha version of a Geometry Wars clone that I called Stroids, made in DarkBasic Pro. It was my first attempt at full-fledged object oriented programming, and I got pretty far – but never finished. When trying to decide on a good game concept for Android this year, I decided to revive my old project from scratch and make it for phones. I think my attempt was a decent success, especially since I made it to the final round of Android Developer Challenge 2.

How long did it take to develop the app?
Michael Angel:
About 3 or 4 months, give or take a week. At least half of the time put into it was writing a versatile and fast OpenGL Game Engine that could be reused for future projects, of which I’m beginning my second one now.

Are there any hidden features to the app?
Michael Angel:
Not necessarily; I thought about adding easter eggs, but given that not all devices have a keyboard, I decided against it. There are, however, unlockable features and achievements in the game that can be earned while playing.

Do you have any future plans for this app?
Michael Angel:
Multi-resolution support, particularly for the newer widescreen phones, and possibly Bosses or scrolling starfields in the background. Wherever my groove takes me, really.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?
Michael Angel:
I’ve actually begun heavy planning for my next game, Arkanis. It will be a scrolling space shooter game with a skewed 2.5D perspective that I think will give a unique look. Though it’s hard to judge when it’ll be done, I’ll hopefully have it near completion within 2 months.. might be a nice Christmas or New Year’s release.
