How did you get into developing apps?

I had a stupid app idea in mind and just received my new Android phone. That’s how everything started.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

I had very good time mixing the face of a friend and mine using a well known photo editing tool. We also had very creepy results just by moving parts of the faces. And we even created a fake guy on facebook that lives his virtual life today. I wanted more people to enjoy this. The problem was that it involved complex actions and knowledge. How long did it take to develop the app?

Steren Giannini:

I kept in my mind this idea of a tool that would automagically mix faces. And one day, I got an Android device. I thought it would be a good idea to make a mobile app of it. First, I had to get familiar with the Android platform (activities, intents, XML for the UI, all this is awesome). Then I developed the engine that detects and extract face parts from pictures. This took me a third of my time. After, I did some UI work, I wanted an intuitive tool, so I tested things until I got something easy to use with a reasonable number of buttons. This was the second third of my time. Finally, I realize now that I spent at least another third of my time debugging and polishing the app. Taking in account the feedback from early testers.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Steren Giannini:

The “full” version of Remixthem has all the features I worked on. However, I would say that they are hidden ways of using it. Some people told me that they downloaded pictures of celebrities to mix themselves with. Others used Remixthem to see what they child would look like

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Steren Giannini:

It depends if people support me buy donating for the “full” version of the app. This could help me to find the time to add additional features that were planned initially : add moustache and accessories to the face, auto adjust colors for a better face mix…

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Steren Giannini:

I have a couple of other nice ideas, but don’t have so much free time. We’ll see.
