How did you get into developing apps?

I have developed in Java for several years but never coded any J2ME. Android seems to be an opportunity to expands into mobile development. I think the mobile market have a number of simple problems yet to be address. Also, I started to see a number of people well versed in using phone/smart phones but not computers. These people are more comfortable with texting than email. I know of people who own a smart phone but not a computer. I know of situations where the number of smart phones in a home out number the number of computers. So, I decided to jump in with Android to try it out!!

What was your inspiration for developing Percent Off?

A lot of apps on mobile devices are entertainment software. I wanted to write apps that solve everyday problems for everyday people. The problem I was trying to solve is simple but ubiquitous. I notice on my trips to the mall with my wife, she have a tendency to ask me the same questions over and over again…”What is 29.99 at 35% off?” or “What is 26.99 at 50% off with additional 50% off I knew she knows how to solve these problems…She is a college grad….I didn’t understand why she asking me these questions over and over again….Then I thought she need a calculator….but she has a calculator on her smart phone….Then I realized I was her calculator.?.?.?. Simply put…It is easier to ask someone or something what is “29.99 at 35% off” than to key in 29.99 – (.35 * 29.99)….

So I wrote Percent Off for two reasons…
1. To help wives easily figure sale price of items discounted
2. To help husbands so they don’t have to answer these questions over and over again…

I started on a Friday night and finished on a Saturday evening…breaks for sleeping, eating, the restroom and a little TV.

Are there any hidden features to Percent Off?

Not really…Percent off interprets a simple English grammar….There are some shortcut expressions…

For example,
19.99 at 18% off plus 19% off can be done using 19.99 @ 18% + 19%
19.99 at 1/2 off can be done using 19.99 @ 1/2
