How did you get into developing apps?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

My father, my brother and I own a software consulting business. We have been developing applications that range from healthcare systems to election management systems. As technology buffs (aka geeks) we fell in love with the idea of the Android OS. My family elected me–the resident gamer–to try my hand at some handheld game development for the system. After our first game, “Spot the Difference” began to climb the list of most popular paid games (including a stint on the “Featured Apps List”), I was hooked!

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

The idea behind “Spot the Difference” is nothing new or novel. It is a popular picture puzzle where users are shown two nearly identical images side-by-side. The user must find five differences between them to beat the current level. I love these picture puzzles! You see them in newspapers, sold as books and on those ever-popular bar-top game machines. They are the type of puzzles you could play for just a few minutes, or a couple hours. Puzzle games, in my opinion are perfectly suited for a handheld device, and will always have a place at the top of popularity charts. I like games with fancy 3D graphics and music and all of those bells and whistles–don’t get me wrong–but if I’m in line at the DMV, or waiting for my to-go order at a local restaurant, I just want to play a quick puzzle game. In that belief, I’m sure I’m not alone!

How long did it take to develop the app?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

That’s a great question! Took me a few weeks to have the original version out, but as anyone who has followed along with the updates can tell you, it has come a long way since last February! We are currently on our 18th revision of the game. Version 2.0 featured all new menus and a high scores module (called the Android Hall of Fame). Version 3.0 featured a new game-play interface and a My Scores list. We are constantly revising and improving the game to meet our users requests. We want our users to always feel they got way more for their money than they expected. We welcome their comments and emails! We often tailor our updates to meet special requests we receive in an email or comment.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

I wish I had a fun little easter-egg to share, but I’m afraid there aren’t any at this point. That said, there are so many features that users may not of yet be aware. One feature we’ve been trying to make our users aware of is the “All Picture Packs” button on the “Free Play Menu.” This button brings up a list of all the many expansion packs we include with every game. (At least half of our time now is spent creating additional content for our games!) From this list you can directly download the content from the Android Market, or pull open details to read more about it. We have posted a youtube video to explain this feature, and we hope the message gets out! We include a few levels to begin wit–just to give you a taste, but there is plenty more where that came from. So come and get yourself a second, third, or 180th helping of levels! We’ll be serving up close to, if not more than 200 expansion levels for “Spot the Difference” by the year’s end!

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

Always! The game is constantly evolving. I am currently developing a challenge interface for all of our games. This will allow users to brag about high scores directly to friends, on their Facebook wall, in a Twitter tweet or set up a formal challenge. Formal challenges allow users to invite friends into a group where they have their own private “Leader Board” and “Smack Board” to compete against one-another. These games are always more fun with friends, so invite them in and see who is the Top Spotter! Who knows, perhaps you could even win something cool from us ;)

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Tailgate Studios, LLC:

Apart from “Spot the Difference” (and the free “SpotLite” version) we currently have one other game on the market called “PhotoSpy.” This game is an I-Spy-like game with a fast-paced, international-espionage flavored story-line. Best of all, PhotoSpy is completely free. We are also discussing a whole line of apps and games geared toward the tailgating set (but details on that are a closely guarded company secret!). We have also been drawing up plans for a level editor for PhotoSpy. And if those weren’t enough, we have a prototype, stand-alone version of “Android Hall of Fame” we’ve been kicking around with user profiles and lots of goodies. We have no date for these projects–it’s all quite a bit of work for myself alone. We’re always looking for good programming help to speed these projects along, but we’ll be sure and give Android App Review Source a tip when something is near completion!
