How did you get into developing apps?

H. Stanaland:

My full time job is in programming business applications, but I have been programming small games as a hobby since about 8th grade. Making games is a good way to learn new programming languages and platforms.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

H. Stanaland:

One of my good memories as a kid is taking turns with my dad and brothers playing Columns on a Sega Game Gear. It was memorable because it was the only video game my dad ever played. I had already developed a game similar to Sega Columns for Linux when I was learning KDE/Qt programming. Since I already had the logic and graphics working in one language, I decided to focus on making a generic framework for “falling block” type games in Android. From this generic framework, I created Tetrominos which is a game similar to Tetris. I was able to use the same framework to recreate 2 other classic games, Dr. Mario and Columns. You can find these on the Market as Dr. Droid and Gem Tower.

How long did it take to develop the app?

H. Stanaland:

My generic game framework took about 20 evenings spread out over a few months, and the Tetrominos game took another 14 or so evenings. I think I spent more time doing graphics than programming. I’ve programmed in Java almost every day for 6 years, but I am not an artist and had to spent a lot of effort to make the artwork look how I wanted them. I have to give credit to Inkscape, an open source vector graphics program, for being such a good tool.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

H. Stanaland:

No hidden game play features, but it does “secretly” send me crash reports….does that count?

Do you have any future plans for this app?

H. Stanaland:

For Tetrominos, I did not deviate too much from the original Tetris game. I am considering on adding another game mode or a sequel that is fresh and original.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

H. Stanaland:

I am currently working on a 3D game. I have never worked in 3D, so it may be a few months before it appears on the market. I announce all my apps at the following URL: http://mrstanaland.blogspot.com/
